BC Senior Women's Tennis Association Handbook

HISTORY

In 1988 Lee Dobson and Donna-Faye Madhosingh invited all women members of Tennis BC, age 35 and over, to attend a meeting held at Vancouver Lawn Tennis and Badminton Club. The group nominated and selected an executive, which would act for all senior women players in co-operation with Tennis BC. The first executive committee included Lee Dobson, President; Donna Faye Madhosingh, Vice President; Pat Runge, Secretary; Bo Kwan, Treasurer; and Marilyn Hermansen, Communications/Membership.

Senior Women players were contacted from each club in order to form a network to ensure players were informed of events and to solicit ideas for expansion. Subsequently the doubles tournament held in March and the singles tournament held in September under the direction of Lee and Donna Faye were more widely publicized.

As well, the executive also took over running the Lovett Cup. This was an annual match between BC, Washington and Oregon. It was modeled after the Denny-Cardinal match played by senior men and named after Claire Lovett who donated the cup. The first match was in 1976 and involved players in singles and doubles in 5 year categories from 40 to 70.

Another tournament, the Jacobs Cup was organized when the Senior Canadian Nationals were held in Vancouver. A challenge match between competitors from the East and the West, it was a one day event involving both singles and doubles.
